Play Responsibly...Know the Odds

Lottery winners often say they had a feeling their ticket was going to be a winner. Maybe you have said the same to yourself.

The reality is, there is no way to predict the outcome of a lottery game. Not knowing the odds hinders players from making informed, responsible entertainment choices. Be an informed player and "Play Responsibly" by knowing the odds for all the games you play. The South Carolina Education Lottery posts odds information on our website at www.sceducationlottery.com. At your lottery retailer, the online game play slips feature the odds as does the ticket dispenser near the point purchase. For instant "scratch-off" tickets, look for the rings added to the side of the retailer's play station.

The South Carolina Education Lottery's games are designed to be fun and entertaining. When the game odds no longer matter and the fun is gone, when playing begins to interfere with family, friends or work, it is time to consider seeking help. The number of adults in the U.S. who meet the criteria for pathological gambling in a given year is two million or 1 percent. An additional 2 percent to 3 percent are estimated to be problem gamblers according to the National Council on Problem Gambling.

SCEL provides information on the local resources offering assistance and the warning signs of problem gambling on the website www.PlayResponsiblySC.com as well as on Play Responsibly brochures found at your lottery retailer’s play station. Printed on all tickets is the S.C. Gambling Helpline number. The Helpline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week providing confidential referral to effective treatment services. A caring professional is available to take your call and provide assistance to you at any time.

The S.C. Gambling Helpline is managed by the South Carolina Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services (DAODAS).  Call 1-877-452-5155 to speak with a trained counselor, who can arrange an individualized treatment plan or simply answer questions for concerned friends or family members. The call is toll-free and confidential.

Know your odds; they are the same every time you play.

Please remember to Have Fun, Play Smart, Play Responsibly.
